Ever looked at the inside of a computer and wondered how all those little numbers and symbols were placed on all those little parts?  No human hand could create such tiny details so accurately, or fast enough to serve on the production lines where such parts are made, and it doesn’t look like ink, does it?  That’s because, in most cases, a human didn’t do it and it isn’t ink.  The numbers are engravings, and they were done by laser.  A special machine called a laser marker is used to stamp each part with what’s needed at the very end of the manufacturing process– and it works an awful lot like a pencil…. a pencil of searing heat and light.

Laser marking machines– also known as laser engraving machines, or just engraving machines– operate by vaporizing, melting, or fracturing the surface of a given material.  Given the heat they produce, they can be used to engrave most tough materials: paper, softwood, and other flammable materials tend to catch fire or vaporize more than what’s needed.  Many plastics have been developed that are especially meant for laser engraving, as some kinds tend to melt into a puddle when exposed to high temperatures.  Foams and vinyl are an example of this– they can’t be engraved.  Metal, oddly enough, was difficult to engrave until special lasers were developed, and materials such as stone and glass, while still difficult, can be treated as well.  

Once used only in industrial applications, laser engraving has become more common outside of the factories.  People now use laser engraving machines to personalize jewelry or create works of art using smaller systems that don’t require so much power to operate.  While still expensive, buying a machine like this is much more feasible than it was a scant decade ago– and can produce amazing results with some practice.

My wife knows that I am a very big fan of David Blaine, and when she was able to find out from her best friend about the David Blaine online store, she thought that it would be ideal to buy me some magic trick merchandise. I now know that it was a marvelous idea to buy me the few items that she bought for me from the online store. I just wish we would be able to find this online store before, and since I was able to learn some of the magic tricks quite quickly using the merchandise, I decided that it would be a great idea to show my wife and daughter some of them. I was able to perform about five of the magic tricks that I was able to perfect in very little time. I am very glad that they both liked my little performance.
